Affiliated hospitals statewide play an important role in residency and fellowship programs. Through joint faculty appointments, research projects and teaching assignments, the hospitals serve as strong educational resources for the university.
University of Wisconsin Hospitals and Clinics
UW Hospitals and Clinics (UWHC) serves as the sponsoring institution for UW Health’s ACGME accredited training programs. UWHC has been long recognized as a national leader in many specialized fields of medicine, including cancer treatment, pediatrics, ophthalmology, surgical specialties and organ transplantation. The hospital is frequently cited in publications rating the nation’s best medical facilities.
University of Wisconsin Carbone Cancer Center
Designated as comprehensive by the National Cancer Institute, the UW Carbone Cancer Center offers innovative cancer treatment to patients from throughout the Midwest and beyond.
American Family Children’s Hospital
Expert faculty and staff at American Family Children’s Hospital provide the most advanced inpatient, outpatient and home care, focusing on routine, preventive health care, as well as more specialized needs from infancy through adolescence.
William S. Middleton Memorial Veterans Hospital
A 120-bed general medical and surgical hospital attached to UW Hospital and Clinics, the William S. Middleton Memorial Veterans Hospital serves about 96,000 outpatients and 5,700 inpatients yearly. A variety of rotations is available for house officers.
Unity Point Health-Meriter
A private, non-profit 448-bed hospital, Meriter offers care in every major medical specialty and provides a variety of clinical experiences and faculty for our house officers. UW Hospital’s programs in high-risk obstetrics, perinatal medicine and neonatal intensive care are at UnityPoint Health-Meriter.
SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital
With 440 beds, St. Mary’s Hospital provides rotations in family medicine, obstetrics and gynecology, urology and pathology. St. Mary’s Hospital is part of SSM Health.

Other affiliated institutions include Marshfield Clinic and St. Joseph’s Hospital in Marshfield, Lutheran Hospital and Gundersen Clinic in La Crosse and Sinai Samaritan Medical Center in Milwaukee.
