MSTP Student Events and Seminars
The Medical Scientist Training Program (MSTP) builds community and explores research and clinical questions through events and seminars planned by our student seminars committee. We also have two major events each year when the whole program comes together — spring symposium and fall retreat.
Our student executive committee addresses issues identified by students and empowers and engages them to participate actively in the planning and execution of the program, including student events.
Weekly Seminars
Planned by the student seminars committee, MSTP Seminars are an opportunity to join with other MSTP members to explore interesting topics and learn from one another. Seminar schedules, including topics and speakers, are shared at the beginning of each semester. Topics include:
- Student research presentations
- Career development
- Responsible conduct of research
- Medical ethics
- Diversity in medicine and research
- Clinical grand rounds, presented by MSTP directors and current MSTP students in clinical training
Annual Spring Symposium
The seminars committee also plans our annual spring symposium, a one-day event featuring an outside MD-PhD physician-scientist keynote speaker, oral presentations of student research, student poster presentations and networking activities. The annual spring symposium is open to the public, and the entire MSTP is in attendance, including all students, directors and administrators.
Annual Fall Retreat
Each fall, all MSTP students attend an overnight retreat at a wooded or lakeside resort outside of Madison.
MSTP students, directors and staff gather to reflect on the previous year and consider the coming year. Retreat planning and execution is a team effort involving the administrators, the MSTP executive committee and the directors.
