Alaa Abd-Elsayed, MD, has been appointed as one of 10 licensed doctors on the Wisconsin Medical Examining Board.

Abd-Elsayed, or Dr. Al as he is known, medical director of the UW Health Pain Management Clinic, 1102 S. Park St., along with the other physicians and three public members are charged with ensuring competent practice of licensed medical professionals in Wisconsin through the state Department of Safety and Professional Services.

Gov. Scott Walker nominated Abd-Elsayed for the position.

The board approves medical license applications, oversees continuing medical education requirements for doctors, and reviews complaints of unprofessional conduct filed against doctors in Wisconsin, according to the Department of Safety and Professional Services website.

The board also offers guidelines for medical practice, for example, on prescribing opioid medication, a specialty of Abd-Elsayed. Treating chronic pain patients without the use of opioids is a focus of the UW Health Pain Management Clinic under his leadership.

Board members are appointed to four-year staggered terms, and their appointments are confirmed by the Wisconsin Senate. Tom Ryan is the board’s executive director.
