The University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health fostered a dialogue about race in health care at its first Diversity Summit: “Identity and Resiliency: An Exploration of the Black Experience in Academic Medicine.”

The event, which took place on January 30th at the Health Sciences Learning Center, featured a keynote speaker and two discussion sessions.

The keynote speaker, Dr. Feranmi Okanlami, graduated from Stanford, earned a medical degree from the University of Michigan and is completing a family medicine residency. He chronicled his journey of resiliency in the face of difficult circumstances, while successfully achieving his dream of becoming a physician.

Two concurrent panel sessions were held: One covering the ability to successfully negotiate salary, title and promotion; the other discussing the experiences of living bi-culturally in the workplace.
