In this role, he will lead the office charged with developing and implementing programs aimed at advancing the success of the school’s faculty.

The school’s Office of Faculty Affairs and Development, which Walaszek will lead, provides resources to the school’s approximately 2,000 faculty members to support their academic and professional development. The office hosts workshops aimed at enhancing faculty engagement, satisfaction, retention and mission-aligned growth. It also develops online learning content on a variety of topics, including education, clinical skills and leadership.

“I am delighted to welcome Dr. Art Walaszek as the new leader of our Office of Faculty Affairs and Development,” said Dr. Robert N. Golden, dean of the school. “Our faculty serve as the foundation for all our missions, and supporting their ongoing professional growth and development is the cornerstone for achieving our vision. His dedication and commitment to faculty development, mentorship and education will ultimately benefit our students, staff and the patients and populations we serve.”

Walaszek provides care to older adults with psychiatric illnesses, such as mood disorders and dementia. As a member of the Wisconsin Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center and Wisconsin Alzheimer’s Institute, he leads public health research on the care of people living with dementia.

Walaszek earned his undergraduate degree in creative writing at Northwestern University and attended medical school at Northwestern’s Feinberg School of Medicine. He completed a residency in psychiatry at the University of Washington and a fellowship in geriatric psychiatry at Northwestern Memorial Hospital before joining the school’s faculty. He also holds a faculty appointment in the Department of Medicine. Walaszek has earned multiple recognitions for his teaching and mentoring, including the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education Parker Palmer Courage to Teach Award and induction into Alpha Omega Alpha and the Gold Humanism Honor Society.

Walaszek will assume the role in December.
